Watson-Marlow Fluid Technology Group's Quantum 600
  • Quantum pump specified for critical UF/DF processes
  • User says “no other pump could meet all of our needs”

An immunotherapy specialist is leveraging the advantages of investing in a new Quantum bioprocessing pump from Watson-Marlow Fluid Technology Group (WMFTG). Seeking a higher capacity pump for its critical UF/DF (ultrafiltration/diafiltration) processes, the market-proven performance of Quantum for single-use downstream applications makes it the obvious choice.

Capacity constraints

“We were looking for a pump with more capacity for our new UF/DF process,” commented the customer. “Our contact at Watson-Marlow told us about the Quantum 600, with flow rates up to 20 l/min, so naturally we were very interested. In addition, Quantum provides extremely low shear, causes no pulsation and the flow can be adjusted with ease. These properties were very important to us.”

Switching to the Quantum 600 also involved a change of tubing material. Rather than the previously deployed silicone tubing, the tubing in the ReNu cartridge utilised by the Quantum 600 is made from PU (polyurethane).

“In the first instance, our Quality Department had to verify that working with PU was totally safe and whether it would affect any of our products,” said the customer. “However, they found it caused no problems whatsoever and was perfectly safe to use.”

Advanced cartridge technology

The patented ReNu SU Technology cartridge is simple to install, enabling its aseptic fluid paths to be positioned quickly and accurately ready for use.

“In short, Quantum was the obvious choice,” said the customer. “It is the only pump on the market that meets the high standards required for a company that works in the bio-pharmaceutical industry. No other peristaltic, centrifugal or diaphragm pump could meet all of our needs.”

Versatility and precision

Perhaps the biggest advantages presented by Quantum are its versatility and precision. The pump maintains good accuracy at very low and very high flows, from 2 to 20 l/min. Furthermore, pump speed is adjustable at the push of a button. In the UF/DF process, control of pump speed is very important to ensure perfect filter operation.

“User friendliness is another big advantage,” stated the customer. “The intuitive user interface makes it very easy to operate the pump, while the informative screen allows us to adjust the speed gradually, instantly showing all the relevant pump status information – a vital factor for quality control.”
